يحتوي هذا الكتاب على طائفة من الرسائل الفلسفية المختلفة، تتناول جوانب بالغة الأهمية في الفلسفة الإسلامية، وتكشف عن ألوان من الفكر الفلسفي عند العرب متنوعة، الرسالة الأولى جاءت في العقل وهي من تأليف الكندري، وهي على صغرها تحتل مكانة ممتازة بين رسائل فيلسوف العرب والرسالة الثانية هي كذلك للكندري وحملت عنوان "دفع الحيلة لدفع الأحزان" أما الرسالة الثالثة فهي رسالة "أبى نصر الفارابي" وجاءت تحت عنوان "رسالة في الملة الفاضلة" وهذه الرسالة هي عبارة عن فصول صدر بها الفارابي رسالته في آراء أعل الفاضلة وهذا النص لم يسبق له أن نشر من قبل في أى كتاب آخر.
وحملت الرسالة الرابعة عنوان "في الرد على جالينوس فيما ناقض فيه أرسطوطاليس لأعضاء الإنسان" وهي من إعداد الفارابي الصغرى، وكتاب فقر الحكماء ونوادر القدماء والعلماء، إلى جانب هذا يقدم الكتاب للقارئ مجموعة ضخمة من الأقوال والنوادر المنسوبة إلى عدد وافر من أعلام الحكماء اليونانيين.
