يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه دراسة نقدية لسونيتات شكسبير الشهيرة، وتتميز هذه السونيتات بأن لغتها ومضمونها أقل فحشاً من السونيتات الأخرى التي لم يضمها هذا الكتاب، ومن الجدير بالذكر أن عدداً كبيراً من كتاب العصر الإليزابيثي (وفي مقدمتهم شكسبير استخدموا لغة وقحة flippant، لغة بذيئة داعرة bawdy في أعمالهم الفنية، ولا عجب في ذلك فقد كان جمهور المستمعين يطرب لذلك وكانت ربة البيت (الملكة العجوز المتصابية إليزابث- انظر إليزابث- التي كانت تقدم القصائد والمسرحيات في قصرها) بالدف ضاربة، وقد كتبت مقالات وكتب عديدة عن لغة شكسبير الفاحشة.
تبدأ هذه الدراسة بتقديم موجز لسيرة حياة شكسبير حالة كثيراً من الألغاز المتعلقة بالسونيتات، ثم أعقبها تعريف كامل "للسونيت" وعالمها والمصدر الذي أتت منه إلى إنجلترا والقواعد التي تحمها، ثم تلا ذلك تعريف بالأشخاص الذين وجهت إليهم هذه السونيتات، وتعريف بملكة العصر الإليزابيثي (إليزابث)، العصر الذي ولدت فيه هذه السونيتات ثم تفسير بعض القواعد النقدية.
بعد هذا التعريف تناولت السونيتات بالمعالجة، وقدمت شرحاً وافياً ومبسطاً للسونيتات يبدأ بشرح عام يتناول فكرة السونيت والظروف التي أوجدتها ثم أتبعته بالنص الإنجليزي المترجم للعربية، وتلا ذلك مسرد بالكلمات يفسر الكلمات الصعبة والغامضة، وأعقب ذلك شرح بنية السونيت، وهو إعادة لصياغتها مع الشرح والتعليق والتفسير، ثم اختتمت ذلك بنقد للنقاط الجوهرية في السونيت، وبذلك أكون قد عالجت السونيت من مداخل مختلفة، كل مدخل منها يزيل بعض الغموض المحيط بها ويبسطها ويجعلها في متناول جميع طبقات القراء ولا سيما القارئ العادي.
