بينما نجد لتصميم الكرافيك تاريخ حديث نسبياً بوصفه منظومة تحتوي أنساق عديدة، فإنه ثمة منجزات فنية تشبه إلى حد ما تصميم الكرافيك وهي تمتد على تاريخ البشرية بدءاً من جدران الكهوف، إلى الأختام الأسطوانية الرافدينية إلى أوراق البردي الفرعونية إلى المخطوطات المضيئة في القرون الوسطى، في كل هذا التاريخ الطويل وفي ظل التطور الهائل الذي حدث مؤخراً في مجال الإتصال المرئي في القرنين العشرين والحادي والعشرين، نجد في بعض الأحيان الإختلاف في ك من الإعلان، وتصميم الجرافيك والفنون الجميلة وعلى الرغم من كل ذلك، إلا أنهم جميعاً يجتمعون في نفس العناصر والنظريات والمبادئ والفعاليات واللغات.
ويعد الهدف النهائي في فن الإعلان هو الترويج للسلع والخدمات، كما أن الشيء الأساسي في تصميم الجرافيك هو تنظيم الأفكار وترتيب المعلمات، وخلق جو من التعبير والشعور للحقائق الفنية التي توثق خبرة الإنسان.
ونستطيع القول أن فن الجرافيك (graphic art) في معناه العام هو فن قطع أو حفر أو معالجة الالواح الخشبية أو المعدنية أو أي مادة أخرى بهدف تحقيق أسطح طباعية، والحصول على تأثيرات فنية تشكيلية مختلفة من خلال طباعتها.
ومن هنا، يمكننا أن نوجز التعريف بأن نسمي هذا الفن (بفن الرسوم المطبوعة).
