العيد اسم لما يعود من الاجتماع العام، وما يتبع ذلك من العبادات والعادات.
وفي النسائي وابن حبان بإسناد صحيح عن أنس: قدم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم المدينة ولهم يومان يلعبون فيهما، فقال: "قد أبدلكم الله تعالى بهما خيراً منهما يوم الفطر والأضحى". قال الحافظ في الفتح: "وفيه أن إظهار السرور في الأعياد من شعار الدين".
ومن تمام إظهار السرور أن يخرج الناس فيه بزينتهم، مهنئين بعضهم بعضاً، في عادة لا ينفك عنها عرب ولا عجم.
لكن ما يميز أعياد المسلمين عما سواها من أعياد الأمم والمبتدعة، ارتباطها بعبادات جليلة، ومعان سامية نبيلة، إضافة إلى ما جمعته من زاد روحي وحسي، ومصالح دينية ودنيوية.
ولما كانت هذه الشريعة محيطة بجميع أنواع الحوادث والنازلات، دقها وجلها، إما على سبيل النص أو الإيماء، أو على مقتضى البراءة الأصلية، تكلم علماؤنا على جواز التهنئة بالمناسبات الشرعية.
ولما كان كلامهم منثوراً في بطون المصنفات، تصدر لجمعه وتقيحه شهاب الملة والدين، الحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني، في هذه الأوراق المباركة التي اعتنى أبو الفضل النايلي بإخراجها، والتعليق عليها بما منّ الله به من كلام أهل العلم.
