احتل المنهج في الحضارة الغربية مكانة هامة جداً، إلى حد أنها سُميت بحضارة المنهج، ولا يعني ذلك أن الحضارة الشرقية (بما فيها العربية الإسلامية) هي حضارة بدون منهج، كما أن الغرب عرف قلقاً منهجياً نتج عن القطيعة مع ماضيه في بداية العصور الحديثة، وهي قطيعة لم تعرفها الحضارة العربية الإسلامية.
فحين نفكر في المنهج نذكر فرنسيس بيكون مؤلف "الأورغانون الجديد، إرشادات صادقة في تفسير الطبيعة"، وديكارت الذي ألف كتاب "خطاب في المنهج" وكتاب "قواعد لتوجيه الفكر"، ونذكر أيضاً أبا حامد الغزالي (المنقذ من الضلال) وابن رشد (الكشف عن مناهج الأدلة في عقائد الملة وتعريف ما وقع فيها بحسب التأويل من الشبه المزيفة والبدع المضلة).
وإلى جانب المعطيات الفلسفية المتنوعة بخصوص المنهج، هناك المعطيات العلمية سواء المتعلقة بالعلوم الحقة أو العلوم الإنسانية التي تثري التفكير في هذه الإشكالية من منظور تلك العلوم ذاتها ومن خلال حوارها النقدي مع المناهج الفلسفية.
