يرتكز موضوع هذا الكتاب على مسألة هامة في الفكر النيتشوي وهي مسألة الحياة والقيم، فمن المعلوم أن ينتشه قد خالف كل الفلسفات الميتافيزيقية السابقة والتصورات الدينية السائدة ولا سيما التصور المسيحي.
لذلك أراد الباحث "نبيل عبد اللطيف" أن يوضح في هذا الكتاب ماذا تعني فلسفة الحياة لدى نيتشه الذي أراد أن يجعل من إرادة القوة ومن غرائز الحيوية مرجعاً أساسياً لخلق القيم التي يحدد بها الإنسان وجوده يريد نيتشه صنع نموذج للإنسان لم يكن موجوداً من قبل، إنه "الإنسان المبدع" الذي يصنع قيمه بنفسه. أي أن المعنى النيتشوي لخلق القيم بما هي قيم تعلن عن تصورات جديدة للحياة والحياة لا تعرف إلا من خلال الفعل، والفعل يحدد كل ما هو حي، وفعل الحياة هو أن نحياها.
وهكذا "يقف نيتشه موقفاً رافضاً لتلك الآراء والنظريات التي تحدد مركز الحياة في الحياة نفسها بل تجعله قائماً في "الآخرة" وفي "العدم"، معتبراً أن مثل هذه الآراء تنتهي إلى سلب الحياة مركزها الحقيقي وإلحاقها بحيز الضعف والخمول، والحال أن الحياة تقترن بكل معاني القوة، وجوهر الحياة نفسها هو إرادة القوة...".
ما يريد أن يقوله "نبيل عبد اللطيف"في كتابه هذا أننا يجب أن نفهم أن حياة القيمة والمعنى ليست هي الغاية في خد ذاتها عند نيتشه، بل هي وسيلة من أجل إدراك غاية أخرى أهم وهي إدراك الكائن لمزيد من القوة والقدرة، فـ"إرادة القوة" أهم بكثير من "إرادة الحياة".
وهكذا، يتمثل المشروع العام لينتشه في إدخال مفهومي المعنى والقيمة في الفلسفة. فالفلسفة في جانب كبير منها، تعيش على وقع هذا المشروع النيتشوي، وذلك بالرغم من القراءات الفلسفية المتعددة لمسألة القيم.
اكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب كون فلسفة نيتشه أحدثت انقلاباً واضحاً ليس في التعامل مع المسألة القيمية فحسب، بل أنها رسمت حياة جديدة، نجد تأثيراتها في عالمنا المعاصر، وذلك من خلال ما نشهده من تحولات عميقة تشق قيمنا على كل المستويات السياسية والدينية والفنية والاقتصادية. وخير شاهد على هذا التحول أن نيتشه نفسه ينبهنا إلى ذلك قائلاً: "إنني أروي حكاية القرنين القادمين؟".
