شرح المصنف أبو الفداء في الكناش الذي أتى ضمن كتابين، أجزاءً من مفصل الزمخشري، وأجزاءً من كافية ابن الحاجب وشافيته، فأتى من ذلك على الموضوعات النحوية والمصرفية والإملائية جميعها. وقد سار أبو الفداء في تقسيم مؤلفه هذا وراء تقسيم الزمخشري لمفصله، فقسم الكناش إلى أربعة أقسام: 1-الاسم، 2-الفعل، 3-الحرف، 4-المشترك، وأنهى الكناش بعقد فصل خاص عن الخط والإملاء، التزم فيه بالشافية لابن الحاجب، كما التزم في القسم الرابع (المشترك) بالمفصل للمزمخشري فقط. وقد تميز أسلوبه بسهولة التعبير، وسلاسة الألفاظ، وانتظامها في تراكيب واضحة، هادفاً من ذلك بيان المسألة النحوية وإبرازها في أوضح صورة وأتم بيان، فيسهب حين يرى الإسهاب لازماً، ويوفر حين الفائدة منه، ويورد ما تتطلبه المسألة حين تكون للمختصين، ويعرضها مجردة مما يثقل فهمها حين تكون للمبتدئين، فجاء الكناش كتاباً تعليمياً من جهة، تخصيصاً من جهة ثانية.
