إن الحديث والفقه توأمان لا ينفكان؛ فإن جزءاً كبيراً من الفقه إنما هو ثمرة للحديث؛ ذلك لأن الحديث النبوي الشريف أحد المراجع الرئيسة للفقه الإسلامي؛ ومن هنا كان علم الحديث رواية ودراية من أشرف العلوم وأجلها، بل هو أجلها على الإطلاق بعد العلم بالقرآن الكريم الذي هو من أصل الدين ومنبع الطريق المستقيم، فالحديث هو المصدر الثاني للتشريع الإسلامي.
ومما لا خلاف فيه أن الحديث النبوي الشريف لم يدون تدويناً رسمياً في عهد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ولا في عهد الخلفاء الراشدين؛ لذا فقد لقي من السلف والخلف عناية كبيرة، وجهداً مميزاً كي لا ينضاف إلى قول الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ما ليس منه؛ لذلك نشأ بجانب علم الحديث رواية علم آخر يخدمه وهو ما أطلق عليه إسم: علم الحديث دراية، وهذا الأخير تندرج تحته علوم كثيرة، ومن تلك العلوم: علم العلل، وهذا الفرع من فروع علم الحديث جليل المقدار؛ لأنه كالميزان في رد أو قبول الأخبار والآثار، ومعرفة هذا النوع من أدق فنون علم الحديث، وأكثرها تشعباً.
ولأهمية علم العلل، جمع المؤلف دقائق هذا الموضوع من خلال أبحاث أو كتب عملت على دراسة الموضوع من ناحية من الحديث دون ربطه بعلم الفقه بواسطة نماذج لذلك.
هذا وقد اقتضت طبيعة البحث تقسيمه بعد هذه المقدمة إلى أربعة فصول:
خصص الفصل الأول منها لبيان ماهية العلة وقضايا أخرى تتعلق بها. أما الفصل الثاني: فقد خصصه لعلل السند. أما المبحث الثالث: فهو في علل المتن. وأما الفصل الرابع فقد خصص للعلل المشتركة، التي تقع في الإسناد والمتن.
