"الوسائل الأدبية في الرسائل العصرية" هو من بديع ما كُتب في (أدب المراسلات) جمع فيه مؤلفه "محمد المحمود النجار" بعض ما كُتب له من أبناء عصره، أو كتبه لبعض الأدباء في رسائل التهاني، والتعازي، وشكوى الحال، والإلتماس، والعتاب، والنصيحة، والتحذير، والوصايا، والرسائل الأهلية، ورسائل الولائم والأفراح، وغير ذلك مما يحتاج إليه الكتّاب، الذين سيجدون فيه ضالتهم، ومثلهم التجار والملاّك، فهو تذكرة للخاصة، وإفادة للعامة، وإعانة للمعلم، وكفاية للمتعلم.
وفي الكتاب أيضاً مراسلات بين المؤلف وإبن خالته "محمد الحسن السمّان" عرضها المؤلف، متتبعاً كل رسالة له بما أرسله - أي المؤلف - لإبن الخالة، في ردّها، ليرى المطلعون على تلك الرسائل كيف يكون النُظم والنثر، ولينظر كيف تتبرّج المعاني البديعة في حُلل من الألفاظ أرق من النسيم ...
ولمزيد من الفائدة يقدم المؤلف تنبيهات في آداب المراسلة يقول فيها: "إذا كتبت إلى من هو دونك فلا تكتب ما يدل على الكبرياء، واجتنب المُزاحَ؛ لئلا يسقط مقامك في عينيه، فيجترئ عليك. وإن كتبتَ إلى من أرفع منك مقاماً فاكتب له ما يدل على احترامك إياه، ولا تكثر من عبارات التبجيل فيعدّها من ضروب التمليق، واقتصر في جوابك على إيراد ما يهمّك ذكره دون اجتياز حدّ الموضوع. وإن كاتبتَ صديقاً يقارنك في العمر والقدر، فليكن مُزاحك في الكلام كالملح في الطعام؛ لأن كثرة المزاح تفقد الهيبة، وتدعو أحياناً إلى التطاول، فتنقلب المودة إلى العداوة والبغضاء.
