يبدو الآن، بالاستناد إلى مذكرات حساني الأخيرة، أنه نجح فيما تريده صربيا الميلوشيفية (إبعاد القيادة الألبانية القومية عن مراكز صنع القرار في الحزب والدولة) ولكنه فشل في وقف الاندفاع الصربي الميلوشيفي نحو كوسوفو تمهيداً لإلغاء الحكم الذاتي الواسع الذي كانت تتمتع به، وضمها إلى صربيا في آذار /مارس 1989. وبهذا فقد وجد حساني نفسه في وضع لا يحسد عليه، باعتباره يمثل الخيار اليوغسلافي التيتوي، في وقت كان فيه الألبان يسعون إلى المزيد من الاستقلال عن بلغراد، بينما كان فيه الصرب يريدون إلغاء ما تحقق للألبان في يوغسلافيا التيتوية.
وفي هذا الوضع الذي لم يعد فيه مقبولاً من الطرفين، آثر حساني اللجوء والاستقرار في مكان ثالث (الجبل الأسود) حيث عاين من هناك انهيار يوغسلافيا التيتوية، واستجمع مذكراته عن تجربته الطويلة، التي قدم فيها مراجعة نقدية ورؤية جديدة لما حدث في تلك السنوات العصيبة.
