لبث كتابُ: "عن الدين: خطابات لمحتقريه من المثقفين" إما مجهولاً أو منسياً أكثر من قرنين لدى الباحثين المهتمين بالفلسفة واللاهوت والدين في دنيا العرب، ولم نعثر على دراسة عنه أو مقالة تنوّه به، وتعرّف القارئَ العربي بأهميته.
هذا الكتابُ تعبيرٌ عن خبرة روح تحاكي خبرةَ الأرواح الحرة المشبعة بمكاشفات صوفية، إنه كلوحة يرتسم فيها سحرُ كلمات عميقة، المُضمَرُ فيها أعمقُ دلالةً من الظاهر، والخفيُّ فيها أعمقُ غوايةً من الجليّ، والجذوةُ فيها أعمقُ حرارةً من اللّهب.
لم يركّز شلايرماخر على نقض أدلّة العقل في مواجهة الدين، وإنما اجترح طريقاً يحاكي لغةَ الشعراء، ويستوحي مخيّلةَ الفنانين، لإكتشافِ جوهر الدين وتفسير وظيفتِه، كان يهمُّه التوغلُ إلى مديات عميقة في الذات البشرية، وتحليلُ طبيعة الحزن والألم واللامعنى الذي يُشيقها، وما الذي يمكن أنْ يقدّمه الدينُ لها.
كان يبحث عن ذلك الدين الذي يشفي الروحَ من أمراضها، وليس الدين الذي يُمرِض الروح، لأن "أهم ما في الدين هو تعدديته في الفهم، وكراهيته للإستبداد الذي يجمَد كل ما لا يتفق معه، ويحجّره ظناً منه بأنه بذلك يحافظ على وجوده.
التعدّد هو جوهر الدين وكنهه... لا يوجد شيء أكثر مناقضة للدين من ذلك المقوّض لقابليته لتعدد أشكال فهمه".
