كان يا ما كان في قديم الزمان، كانت في مملكة بعيدة في إثيوبيا أميرة جميلة، تدعى عايدة. وكانت المفضلة لدى ابيها الملك أمونسرو. في ذلك الوقت، كانت مملكة إثيوبيا تخوض حرباً ضد المملكة المجاورة مصر، وذلك للإستيلاء على الأراضي. ومع اشتداد الحرب أمر الملك أمونسرو شعب إثيوبيا بعدم الإقتراب من الحدود، حتى إبنته عايدة، ولكن عايدة لم تحتمل الإحتجاز أكثر، فاستغلت غياب الملك، وغادرت القصر سراً مع خدمها. وفي تلك الأثناء كان الجنود المصريون يقتربون من الحدود فوقعت أسيرة مكبلة بالأصفاد والسلاسل واقتيدت إلى مصر لتصبح أمَة. وعلى الرغم من أن عايدة لم تخبر أحداً أنها أميرة، فقد لفت جمالها ملك مصر، فرعون، الذي اختارها لتخدم إبنته أمنيرس. تتوالى الأحداث حتى يقع نقيب شجاع مصري يدعى رادميس في حبها من النظرة الأولى. أحبته هي أيضاً ناسبة أن راداميس عدو بلدها إثيوبيا.
ولكن الأميرة أمنيريس كانت معجبة أيضاً براداميس الذي سيكون هو القائد المختار للجيش المصري الذي سيقاتل الأحباش. يعود راداميس منتصراً، وفي نشوة النصر يقدم الملك فرعون يد إبنته للقائد المنتصر ولا يستطيع راداميس الرفض. ولكنه يبقى على حب عايدة. تتوالى الأحداث في القصة حتى تكتشف إبنة فرعون أن والد عايدة يحاول إقناع راداميس بالهروب معه وعايدة الى إثيوبيا والعيش معاً. وذاع خبر خيانة راداميس في أنحاء المملكة، ويُسجن في انتظار عقوبة الإعدام ...
