يكشف كتاب البديع، للخليفة العباسيّ: أبي العبَّاس عبد الله بن المُعتز عن لون جديدٍ من ألوانِ البلاغةِ في البيانِ والبديع، وفي النَّثْرِ والشِّعْرِ؛ وهذا اللَّوْنُ لَمْ يَهْتَدِ إليه أحدٌ قَبْلَ ابن المُعتزّ، وهو القائلُ: "وَمَا جَمَعَ فُنُوْنَ البَديْعِ ولا سبقني إليه أحد"، كما أنه ليس من إختراع المتقدمين، فهو موجودٌ في الشعر العربي، وفي أقوالِ المتحدثين والكُتَّاب المُتقدِّمين والمُتأخِّرين، "إنَّما غَرَضُنا من هذا الكتاب تعريفُ النَّاسِ أنَّ المُحْدَثِيْنَ لم يسبقوا المُتقدِّمين إلى شيءٍ من أبوابِ البديْعِ".
ويُمْكِنُ أن نَقُوْلَ بأنَّ ابن المُعْتَزِّ هُوَ أوَّلُ من اقتحمَ هذا الباب، فاتحاً مصراعَيْهِ أمام آداب العَرَبِ، قديْمهَا وحديْثِهَا، وإن كان قد تأثَّرِ بأُستَاذِهِ ثعلب، فكان له شرفُ السَّبْقِ، إلاَّ أنَّ ابن المُعتَزّ أغفل كثيراً من أبوابِ البديع المعروفة اليوم، ولم يأتِ إلاّ بسبعة عشر لوناً من ألوانهِ، في وقتٍ بلغَ تعدادُ ألوانهِ عند صفيّ الدين الحلِّي مئةً وأربعين لوناً.
وقد اعتمد المحقق في تحقيق هذا الكتاب وشرحهِ على نُسْخَهِ المُسْتَشْرِقِ الرُّوسي "أغناطيوس كراتشكُوفِسْكي" التي نشرها عام 1935م، وعلى النُّسْخَةِ المعدَّلَةِ والمْصَحَّحَةِ التي نشرها الدكتور عبد المُنعمِ خفاجي عام 1945م.
