رواية "شيرلي" لشارلوت برونتي تصور الحياة والكون صراعاً متواصلاً على كل الصعد، كصراع الإنسان مع نفسه لمعرفة حقيقة ما يريد، ومقاومته للعادات والتقاليد الضاغطة، ومحاولته التغلب على الأوضاع السياسية والاقتصادية التي تؤثر على شؤون حياته. وهناك صراع بين فئات البشر الذين تتضارب مصالحهم، بالإضافة إلى التجاذب القائم بين الطبيعة وضرورات التصنيع والعمران التي تبتلع معالمها وتشوهها.
لكن الرواية تنتهي إلى أن مسيرة الحياة تقتضي التعقل والتوفيق بين هذه القوى المتصارعة.
