تناول تينيسي وليامز الذي هو من مواليد 1911، والمتوفى عام 1983 في مسرحياته الكثير من الشرور في مجتمعه، وفي مسرحيته "فجأة في الصيف الماضي" يجسد وليامز في مجتمه ذلك المرض الأخلاقي الحضاري الوبيل ألا وهو الإيدز، وكان ذلك قبل من ثلاثين سنة قبل أن يتفشى هذا المرض ليأتي على ما تبقى من الحضارة الغربية الحديثة من أخلاق ومثل.
وفي هذه المسرحية كذلك، هناك طرح مرير بين الحقيقة والكذب، بين المثاليات المزيفة والواقع الدامغ، وهكذا كان ديدن وليامز في إنه لم يهرب في حياته من الحقيقة مهما كانت مؤلمة لا بل أحياناً مدمرة، إذ لا يمكن للحقيقة إلاّ أن تظهر في النهاية.
