ان هذا الكتاب هو موجز شاف مبسط، وقد جعلته في تمهيد وأربعة فصول، في (التمهيد) عرضت بإشارة مقتضبة لنشأة النحو، وفي (الفصل الأول): درست مدرستي البصرة والكوفة، مبيناً منهج كل منهما، ذاكراً مصادر الدراسة عند البصريين، عارضاً باقتضاب مظاهر الخلاف بين المدرستين، مقسماً علماء كل مدرسة إلى طبقات، متحدثاً عن أشهرهم، ذاكراً بعض آرائهم .
وفي (الفصل الثاني): الذي خصصته لدراسة المدرسة البغدادية بينت فيه منهج هذه المدرسة، وتحدثت عن أشهر علمائها بعد أن قسمتهم إلى ثلاث مجموعات، المجموعة الأولى أصحاب البصريين، والمجموعة الثانية أصحاب الكوفيين، والمجموعة الثالثة لمن جمعوا بين المدرستين .
وفي (الفصل الثالث): تحدثت عن المدرسة الأندلسية وعن اشهر علمائها مبيناً رأي كل منهم ومنهجه في الدراسة النحوية .
وفي (الفصل الرابع): درست المدرسة النحوية في مصر والشام، مبيناً قيمة هذين الإقليمين، وأثرهما في تطور الدراسة النحوية، وقسمت علماءها إلى طبقات، وختمت الحديث بطبقة النحاة المتأخرين، وقد حاولت جاهداً تقديم صورة مبسطة عنهم لقراء العربية. وختمت الكتاب بأهم خصائص المدرسة النحوية في مصر والشام .
