من خلال دراستي لتاريخ أوروبا في العصور الوسطى وأوائل العصور الحديثة، استوقفني موضوع محاكم التفتيش، الأداة القسرية لمحاربة الفكر الإنساني، ومحق التوجهات العلمية التي رافقت إنتقال أوروبا من عصورها المظلمة إلى مشارف العصر الحديث، بكل ما يحمله من تغييرات جذرية مست جوهر الحياة الإنسانية.
ومن قراءاتي المتواضعة للموضوع، وجدت أن تلك المحاكم بكل ما اتصفت به من عسف، تتضاءل في هجمتيها، مقارنة بالمحاكم الأسبانية، ودفعني ذلك إلى محاولة تتبع نشوء تلك المحاكم، ودراسة إجراءاتها في مرحلة تكوينها، وتوافرت لدي، في المكتبات المحلية، وعبر مراسلاتي الخارجية مع المهتمين بالموضوع، مادة مناسبة شجعتني على خوض التجربة بدراسة موضوعية بعيدة عن التحيز والمبالغة.
وقد قسمت البحث على مقدمة وثلاثة فصول وخاتمة، درس الفصل الأول أصول محاكم التفتيش والدوافع التي أدت إلى نشوئها، وكرس الفصل الثاني لدراسة النظام الإداري والمالي لمحكمة التفتيش منذ بدايتها في اشبيليه، وتتبع فروعها في أنحاء أسبانيا الأخرى، أما الفصل الثالث فبحث إجراءات المحكمة - منذ القبض على المتهم حتى إصدار الحكم عليه.
