يبحث تاريخ البصرة منذ العصور القديمة وحتّى أواخر القرن العشرين من جميع النواحي اجتماعيا وسياسيا وعسكريّا واقتصاديا وثقافيّا وبيئيّا ودينيا وصحيا. وهذا الجهد البحثي يبدأ بعصور ما قبل التاريخ، وبعد أن يغطّي الفترة منذ تلك العصور وحتّى نهاية العصر الأموي بإيجاز، يبدأ بالتركيز المفصّل منذ قيام الدولة العبّاسيّة عام 751م (132هـ) فصاعدا. وقد اعتمد الباحث على طائفة واسعة من المصادر، تشمل كلّ ما تيسّر له الاطلاع عليه من مصادر معاصرة تاريخيّة، بما في ذلك المخطوطات القديمة والكتب المطبوعة، والوثائق الرسميّة، والرسائل الشخصيّة، وشهادات شهود العيان، التي تشمل مسافات زمنيّة تزيد على ألف (1000) عام، ينتمي أصحابها إلى خلفيّات جغرافيّة وثقافيّة واجتماعية ودينيّة ومذهبيّة وقوميّة، ومدارس فكريّة وعلميّة، كثيرة ومتنوّعة، منها ما هو متداخل ومنها ما هو متضارب، بما في ذلك تقارير وكتب الرحّالة والقناصل والتجّار الأجانب. وهو حصيلة جهد تراكمي لأعمال سلسلة طويلة ممن سبق هذا الباحث من باحثين ومؤرّخين، بمن فيهم عدد من أفراد أسرته. وقد جمع المؤلّف أعمال كلّ من تناول تاريخ البصرة من قبله، وأضاف إليها موادّ جديدة لم تنشر قبلاً، إذ بقيت محفوظة في خزائن المكتبات الخاصّة مدّة قرون طوال. ويحتوي الكتاب في مجلّده الأخير، الملحق، وثبت المراجع، وطائفة واسعة من الجداول المبوّبة، السكّانيّة والعمرانيّة والجغرافيّة والإداريّة، إضافة للصور التاريخيّة.
