كانت رينيه ترتدي فستاناً من قماش التول الأبيض المزركش بسبع دوائر صغيرة وبأوراق لبلاب ذات بذور عنبيّة حمراء، تتكرّر على صدارها المميّز للعذراء، وعلى طيّات التول عند كميها. وهناك أوراق لبلاب مزهرة بالبذور الصغيرة الحمراء نفسها تلتف حول جديلتها، وتنزل حتّى كتفيها في خيطين أخضرين. كانت تجلس مرتخية الرأس قليلاً على الكنبة. وكان شعرها الكستنائيّ الجميل المسحوب إلى الأمام يغمر أعلى جبينها المضيء. برق صامت ناعم، نار هادئة عميقة، في عينيها الداكنتين المحجّبتيْن والغارقتين، في نظرتها التي لا نراها. كان النور يلاعب خدّيها. والظلّ يدغدغ فمها عند الزاويتين؛ بينما تترك شفتاها، المزمومتان عادةً في مطّة صغيرة متعالية، نصف انفراجة تلوح منها ابتسامة روحها. كان شعاع يضيء ذقنها؛ ويبدو في جيدها عقد من الظّلال كأنّه يتحرّك مع كلّ حركة من رأسها. كانت جذّابة بتلك الطريقة، وقسماتها ضائعة في الضوء النازل من الثريّات، وملامح وجهها مستغرقة في سعادة طفلة كما لو كانت ممحوّة بتأثير الشمس.
