إن: (الفقه) لغة: الفهم، ثم خصَ به (علم الشريعة)، والعالم به (فقيه) [مختار الصَحاح] ولقد إضطلع بعبء إستخلاص الأحكام الشَرعيَة أئمة أعلام، من الكتاب والسَنَة، والإجماع، والقياس، التي هي المصادر؛ وأنفقوا أعمارهم وعقولهم وأفهامهم في هذا الإستنباط؛ في ترتيب وتنظيم وتوسع، وإجتهدوا فيه إجتهاداً عظيماً. ولقد إعتمد أهل (السنة) على أربعة من هؤلاء الأعلام.
وحاول بعض العلماء المتخصصين -الجهابذة- جمع هذه المذاهب فيكتاب واحد، ليميز كل مذهب عن غيره، وأبرز ما بين أيدينا كتاب [الفقه على المذاهب الأربعة] لمؤلفه: "عبد الرحمن بن محمد عوَض الجزيري" (1299-1360هـ)؛ الكتاب الذي يعتبر –بحقَ- مصدراً جامعاً. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب عمل على إختصار الشيخ محمد العطى تسهيلاً على الخاصَة والعامَة للإستفادة منه، مع الحاجة إليه.
أولاً: بجعله في صيغة السؤال والجواب.
ثانياً: بتبسيط بعض المصطلحات.
ثالثاً: باختصار المطوَلات.
