كتاب كلود هذا يحاول الجمع بين الدقة والشمول، تتبصت مسيرة التصوير منذ بداياته الإنسانية إلى عصرنا الحاضر مبينة بدقة وإيجاز جميع تجليات التصوير في التراث الإسلامي فكان طبيعياً أن تتوقف طويلاً عند الخط العربي باعتباره أساس التصوير في الإسلام وأن تلم إلمامه سريعة بسائر مظاهر التصوير التي تجلت بالعمارة ومظاهرها المختلفة من مساجد ومدن الخ والزخرفة والفنون التطبيقية. كما كان من الطبيعي أن تحيط بالمفهوم الإسلامي للتصوير لتصل إلى استنتاجات رائعة من مثل:
"بالرغم من تعدد منابع الفن الإسلامي إلا أن المتأمل لا تغيب عنه وحدة المنطلق التي ميزت الفنان المسلم في كل مكان من الإمبراطورية الإسلامية الشاسعة من الصين إلى الأندلس والتي نستطيع أن نلخصها في المفهوم الرمزي التجريدي للعالم وفي سعيه الدائب نحو المطلق فيما يصطنع من وحدات زخرفية تقود دائماً إلى منبع واحد.
إنه كتاب يفيد المؤرخ بما فيه من معلومات تاريخية، ويفيد اللغوي والأديب لما فيه من إضاءة هامة على مسيرة الخط، ويفيد المهتم بالحضارات لما فيه من مقارنات بين الشرق والشرق وبين الشرق والغرب، وقبل هذا كله، وبعد هذا كله إنه منارة لكل فنان ورسام في عالمنا العربي والإسلامي يساعده على فهم حقيقة التصوير في تراثه وما يتضمنه من روحانية وسمو وجمالية، وفي هذا ما فيه من مده بزخم قوي في انطلاقته نحو الإبداع.
