قصة الأطفال تندرج تحت عنوان الأدب القصصي وتتميز "ببساطة التعبير وسهولة اللغة وكثرة المواقف المثيرة لخيال الأطفال كالأعمال السحرية والرحلات في بلاد العجائب وغير ذلك". وقصة الأطفال عدا ذلك تلتزم بقواعد فنية خاصة ومجموعة قواعد تربوية وسيكولوجية.
في الصفحات الأولى من الكتاب تعرض الكاتبة لتاريخ أدب الأطفال وأهم النظريات التي عالجت هذا الفن كما تتوقف عند بعض الاعتبارات التي تتعلق بجمهور القصة، حيث تلحظ أن هناك تفاوتاً في خصائص هذا الجمهور تعود إلى التفاوت في المستويات البيئية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والحضارية. كما تذهب إلى أن المتخصصين في أدب الأطفال يجمعون على ألا تطغى الاعتبارات التربوية على ألفية أو العكس.
ثم تنتقل بعد ذلك إلى دراسة الاعتبارات التربوية والسيكولوجية كالتربية والقيم الإيجابية والسلبية، وأطوار ونمو الطفل وعلاقتها بالقصة وتفرد الكاتبة قسراً من دراسته الدراسة الاعتبارات الفنية في قصة الأطفال، كالموضوع والبناء والحبكة والسرد والشخصيات وبيئة القصة والخيال.
