المزامير في الأصل شعار عبرانية، فقد كان العبرانيون مولعين بالشعر على أنواعهِ إلى حدّ بعيد، وقد ضعوا له الألحان وترنموا به في الأفراح والأتراح وبخاصةٍ في المواسم والأعياد، ونظموا أيضاً الأشعار الرثائية، فقد وضعت العذارى التقاريظ الرثائية لبنت يفتاح، ووضع داود المراثي الشعرية لشاول ويوناثان وابنير.
والشعر كثير في أسفار العهد القديم، فمنه سفر أيوب والمزامير والأمثال والجامعة ونشيد الأناشيد ومراثي ارميا وغيرها من أسفار الأنبياء، ومما لا ريب فيه أن المزامير من أبلغ الأشعار الدينية وأسلسها؛ وتراها - رغم إتسّامها بالطابع العبراني - تماشي عواطف الناس في كل عصر وكل مكان، فيكفيك أن تعلم أن لغتها قد جمعت على علوّ الطبقة سلاسة التعبير فتصرّفت في وجوه الكلام ما شاء لها التصرف مع السهولة والبراعة والإبداع.
ومن هذه المزامير ما يتصل بالعبادة ومنها ما يتصل بالحمد والمديح والرثاء، ومراثي العبرانيين أشعار شعبية حزينة تتحدث عن مجد صهيون الغابر والبكاء عليه، وقد قسم العبرانيون السفر إلى 150 مزموراً وقسم المسيحيون إعدادهُ إلى ما يقرب من 2500 عدداً، وقد نُظم معظم المزامير في أيام داود وسليمان.
وفي هذا الكتاب نقل رزق الله عرمان مجموعة من المزامير إلى اللغة العربية عن الترجمة اليونانية السبعينية مستعيناً بعلماء اللغات والآثار وذلك طوال ست سنين من دون إنقطاع عن العمل.
