خلعتا نعليهما ، لما اقتربتا من ضقة التهر ، ومشتا على الحصى ببطء وحذر . اختارتا مكانة محفوفة بالأشجار ، تخلصتا فيه من الثياب وتوجهتا عاريتين صوب الماء . سطع شبحهما تحت نور القمر ، فبانتا بجسدهما المكشوف وشعرهما المسدول كأنهما خرجتا من ځلم أو جاء تا من كوني بعيډ [ ... ] انتبهت مونيا ، بعد حين ، فوجدت نفسها وحيدة في التهر . نادت مرارة على مايليا دون أن يأتيها أي رد منها . لم تسمع سوى رجع اسمها يتكرر مع الضدي ويضيع في الظلمات . ظتتها تمازحها ، فقالت لها : « كقي ، عزيزتي ، عن مزاحك هذا إنه يفزعني ! » ، ولكنها لم تتلق منها أي جواب .
