يجمع المؤرخون العرب على أن كتاب "فتوح أفريقية والأندلس، لمؤلفه عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله بن عبد الحكم، من أهم الوثائق التاريخية للفتح العربي وأقدمها على الإطلاق، وقد نحا فيه الملف نحو الإسناد، فجاء ليحفظ لنا أهم أبناء الفتح لهذه البلاد. وما رافقه من حوادث وأحداث ووقائع للمعارك الجارية بما يمكن اعتباره المرجع الصحيح لتأريخ هذا الفتح العظيم (أفريقيا والأندلس) الذي كان سبباً لاتصال العالم العربي بأوروبا، وعليه ترتب نتائج ذات أهمية عظمى بالنسبة إلى الحياة الفكرية والسياسية على اختلاف مظاهرها في الأندلس والشمال الإفريقي.
يبدأ الكتاب بلمحة عن تأريخ الفتح العربي عامة وبيان لأهمية الفتح العربي لمصر والمغرب والأندلس وما ترتب على ذلك من مظاهر علمية وتاريخية وحضارية. يتبع ذلك عرضاً شاملاً لـ 1- فتح الأندلس، 2- استئذان عمرو بن العاص عمر بن الخطاب في غزو افريقيا، 3- غزو المغرب بعد عمرو بن العاص وفتوحه.
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من كونه بمثابة تأريخ شامل للفتوح الإسلامية مروية بالسند المتصل وموثقة وفقاً لأمهات الكتب التاريخية المعتبرة مثل: تاريخ ابن عبد الحكم، وتاريخ الطبري، وتاريخ افتتاح الأندلس لابن قوطية (القرطبي)، والعبروديون المبتدأ والخبر (تاريخ ابن خلدون) وغيرها، والكتاب صورة حيَة لحركة الجيوش ووقع السيوف ودخول القوات الإسلامية تلك البلدان وهدفها الأساسي رفع راية الإسلام ونشر الدين، ومواقف ملوك تلك الدول من البيزنطيين والروم من الدخول في الإسلام أو عدمه وما ترتب على ذلك من نتائج شهدها القرن السادس للميلاد...
