الكلام الإنساني عبارة عن سلاسل صوتية يتصل بعضها ببعض اتصالاً وثيقاً، فنحن لا نتكلم أصواتاً مفردة، وإنما كلمات وجملاً وفقرات.
وليس كل صوت صالحاً لأن يجاور أي صوت في السلسلة الكلامية، فمخرج الصوت وصفاته، هما اللذان يحددان ورود صوت بعينه، في موقع بعينه أو عد وروده، ذلك أن أعضاء النطق لا تنطق - في الكلام العادي - كل صوت مستقلاً بمفرده، وإنما يتأثر نطق الصوت الواحد بالأصوات السابقة عليه واللاحقة له.
ولهذا تحرص اللغات عامّة على أن يكون هناك انسجام تام بين الأصوات داخل الكلمات، حتى تؤمّن قدراً أعلى من السهولة في النطق، وحداً أعلى من الوضوح في السمع.
