تعتمد الرياضيات في الروضة على توفير الفرص للأطفال لتنمية خبراتهم في إستعمال الأعداد وبعض الأفكار البسيطة الملائمة لنموهم.
ويعتبر اللعب والقصص والنشاطات الأخرى من أفضل الوسائل للوصول إلى هذا الهدف، وبها يكتسب الأطفال خبرات عن الأعداد والأشكال والألوان والزمان والمكان تمهيداً لإعدادهم وتهيئتهم لدراسة الأفكار الرياضية في مرحلة الدراسة الإبتدائية.
لذلك كان على المعلمة أن تقدم الأفكار الرياضية البسيطة عن طريق غير مباشر، وأهم هذه الطرق: اللعب - القصص - النشاطات الجماعية، مثل عملية البناء تزيين الصفوف، زرع البذور إستعمال الخرز الملون من خلال الجولات والزيارات.
ومن أهم المفاهيم الأساسية في الرياضيات مفهوم ((المجموعة))، لذا على المعلمة أن تستعمل هذا اللفظ وهي تتحدث مع الأطفال مجموعة كتب - مجموعة لعب - مجموعة دفاتر وإذا ما تكررت هذه الكلمة لا بد أن يعرف الأطفال معناها.
وتنطلق المعلمة من ((المجموعة))، إلى الكثرة والقلة بدون أن تتطرق إلى ذكر الأعداد (كبير - صغير - ألوان - أشكال - حجوم - طويل - قصير - ثقيل خفيف) ثم إلى المقارنة بين الأشياء من حيث الطول والكبر (توضيح: ثقيل - أثقل - قصير - أقصر- صغير - أصغر، طويل - أطول) ثم إلى تحديد المكان: فوق - تحت - يمين - يسار، بعيد - قريب، خارج - داخل ، ... إلخ.
وبعد هذا تنتقل المعلمة إلى تعليم عدداً عدداً، عن طريق الأمثلة الحية واللعب والقصص، على أن تربط بين العدد الجديد والأعداد التي تعلمها الطفل في دروس سابقة.
