إن أغلب المؤلّفات التي تناولت بالدراسة، الرياضيّات والفكر الرياضي، تاريخه ومصادره، لم تستطيع أن تحدِّد على وجه الدقّة، تاريخ ومكان نشأة الرياضيّات، كما لم تستطع الإجابة، عن بعض التساؤلات المبدئية مثل: هل اهتدى الإنسان إلى الرياضيات أم اخترعها؟!. وهل تمّ ذلك عن طريق فعل إرادي أم أنّ الأمر لم يكن سوى صدفة حسنة قادته إليها؟!.
والحقيقة، أنّ هناك العديد من الإجابات الرائعة في تفسيرها، إلاَّ أنّها إجابات تستند إلى الظن والتخمين، أكثر من كونها مبنية على شواهد ومؤيَّدة بالبيِّنات الصحيحة؛ خصوصاً وأنّ هذه المرحلة المقصودة تقع خارج نطاق التاريخ المدوَّن، فهي لذلك خالية كليّةً من الأدلّة والوثائق والأسانيد.
من هذا المنطلق، درس المؤلف الفكر الرياضي الذي لا يكتفي بدراسة الرموز في حدّ ذاتها إنما يرمي إلى دراسة ما وراء هذه الرموز من معانٍ وأفكار؛ لأنّه لا يمكن فصل دراسة الفكر الرياضي عن شتّى مظاهر الحياة الثقافيّة والإجتماعية، لأن الفكر الرياضي نشاط إنساني وفعالية عقلية ومنهج التفكير قبل أي إعتبار آخر، فهو لم يكن بمعزل عن بقية أنشطة الإنسان الأخرى.
إذن فالفكر الرياضي، هو جزء من كون الإنسان وبيئته - مؤثراً ومتأثِّراً - فكما يدخل التفكير الرياضي في الصيد والزراعة والبناء والحرب والتسلية، فإن هذه الأشياء تؤثّر بدورها في الفكر الرياضي.
