"جان مازيل" كاتب ومستشار فني وسينمائي. ولد في باريس عقب الحرب العالمية الأولى وأمضى سنوات عديدة في المغرب ليدرس تاريخه وعاداته وفنه. كما أشرف على بعثات إنتولوجية وأثرية في جبال الأطلس العليا والسفلي والجنوب المغربي.
كرس جان مازيل نفسه،منذ عام 1961 للحضارة الفينيقية وتوسعها في العالم، وأعد فيلماً طويلاً الألوان، إضافة إلى هذا حول هذه الحضارة وذلك من خلال سلسلة من الرحلات عبر ستة عشر بلداً.
قطع المؤلف خمسة وخمسين ألف كيلو متر في البحث عن الطرق البحرية التي سلكها الفينيقيون للسعي وراء القصدير والذهب: نزل في محطاتهم المنتشرة في حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط الشمالي والجنوبي والغربي، تابع مسارهم على شواطئ أوربا الغربية حتى انكلترا، وعلى شواطئ إفريقيا الغربية حتى نهر السنغال.
يقدم لنا المؤلف شعباً مدهشاً، تاريخه مزيج من الأسطورة والواقع. وقد وجد المؤلف صعوبة كبيرة في تحديد مواقع استيطان الفينيقيين وتحركهم، ذلك أنهم لم يتركوا آثاراً في كل المواقع التي مروا بها أو أقاموا: فقد اكتفوا في كثير من الأحيان بإقامة محطات خفيفة ومراكز ومستودعات ومخازن.
وقد اتبع المؤلف في تحديد معالم الطرق الفينيقية نحو الغرب مصادر ثلاثة: 1-دراسة الآثار حيث وجدت ووصفها وتحليلها واستنتاج الوقائع منها. 2-الاعتماد على ما كتبه المؤلفون الأقدمون حول الفينيقيين. 3-الاستنتاج المستند إلى الوقائع مثل العادات والتقاليد والفنون التزيينية.
وغالباً ما يقابل المؤلف بين المصادر الثلاثة ليخرج بنتائج هامة ومفيدة.
فالفينيقي بحار مسالم يتميز بروحانية عالية وفكر عملي متميز. انتقل عبر البحر الأبيض المتوسط ساعياً للحصول على المعادن الاستراتيجية في ذلك العصر: القصدير والنحاس والذهب، فوصل إلى مصادرها في بريطانيا والسنغال وأقام عبر دروبه محطات ومستوطنات ومنشآت لم يكن لها الطابع الاستعماري المعروف، كما بنى علاقات ود وصداقة مع السكان الأصليين ونقل معه أهم اختراع حضاري عرفته البشرية: إنه الأبجدية الفينيقية الصوتية المبسطة إضافة إلى صناعة الأرجوان، لون الفخامة الإمبراطورية.
