صنف الشيخ عبد القادر الجيلاني كتابه هذا "الغنية لطالبي الحق"، وكما أشار في المقدمة، بناءً على إلحاح بعض أصحابه. وقد كان حرصه شديداً على الاختصار وعدم الإطالة فجاء غنية بحق. بدأ الشيخ عبد القادر بذكر ما يجب على من يريد الدخول في الإسلام بمعرفة فرائضه وأركانه من صلاة وزكاة وصيام وحج. ثم ذكر كتاب الآداب وما تضمنه من آداب السلام والاستئذان وآداب الأكل والشرب والحمام واللباس، وآداب النوم والسفر، وبر الوالدين، وآداب الدعاء، والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، وآداب النكاح.
ثم ذكر باباً في معرفة الصانع عز وجل، وعقد فصلاً في اعتقاد أن القرآن الكريم كلام الله وأن القرآن حروف مفهومة. مخصصاً من ثم فصلاً في بيان الفرق الضالة عن طريق الهدى والتحذير منها ليعقد من ثم باباً في الاتعاظ بمواعظ القرآن الكريم وجعله مجالساً، فكان المجلس الأول في الاستعاذة ومعناها وما يستفيده العبد بالاستعاذة، والمجلس الثاني في فضل "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم" والمجلس الثالث في التوبة وشروطها وكيفيتها، ومن ثم مجلس في التقوى، وطريقها التخلص من مظالم العباد، وصفة الجنة وما أعدّ الله لأهلها، وكذلك صفة النار وما أعد لأهلها ومن ثم مجلس في فضائل شهر رجب، وشعبان، ورمضان وليلة القدر، ومجلس في فضائل أيام العشر، وفضائل يوم عرفة، وفضائل عيد الأضحى ويوم النحر، ومجلس في فضائل يوم الجمعة وما يسنّ فيه.
ثم عقد باباً في الصلوات الخمس، وبيان أوقاتها وسننها وفضائلها والأدعية التي يدعي به عقبها. وبعد ذلك كله ذكر كتاب آداب المريدين، وأدب الصحبة والعشرة، والمجاهدة، والتوكل والشكر والصبر والرضا والصدق، وخصال أهل المجاهدة والحماسة وأولي العزم، وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً حيث تم ضبط النص ووضع عناوين تسهل تناوله، كما تم تخريج آياته القرآنية وأحاديثه النبوية مع ذكر درجة الحديث من الصحة أو الضعف. مع استهلاله بمقدمة تتحدث عن الكتاب وعن مؤلفه الشيخ عبد القادر الجيلاني، وختمه بفهارس لأطراف الحديث والأثر.
