جعل الله تعالى الخيلَ عِزّاً لأوليائه عند مضائق الحروب، وكهفاً في ميدان المنازلة عند تراكم سحائب الكروب، فهي سفينةُ الرّاكب في تلك المواكب، كم افتُتحت بها حصونٌ عاليةٌ، وكم استُصغرتْ بها نفوسٌ غالِية، وَرَدَتْ في فضائلها الأنباء العديدة، وسَرَدَتْ أوِصافَها أَلسنةُ الفرائد المُفيدة.
ولمّا كانَ جمعُ المُتَفَرِّقِ مُنْبِئاً عن لطيفِ الشّمائل، مؤرخ ملة وأحد أعلامها على الطبري المكي الشافعي ما تفرًّقَ في بطون الكتب مِن تلكَ الفضائل، وسمّاه (فوائد النَّيْل بفضائل الخَيْل) ورتبه على ثمانية مقاصد، ترغيباً للطالب القاصد: المقصد الأول: فيما يتعلّق بالخيل من حيث اللفظ والمعنى، المقصد الثاني: في وصف الله تعالى ملائكته بكونهم مسوّمين، ومعنى التّسويم وما يتعلق به، المقصد الثالث: في الأحاديث والآثار الدّالّة على فضل إتخاذها، المقصد الرابع: في بيان ما يحتاج إليه من معاني بعض الأحاديث الواردة فيها، المقصد الخامس: في المسابقة على الخيل، المقصد السادس: في المناضلة، المقصد السّابع: في خيل النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، المقصد الثامن: فيما أشار إليه الشّعراء في أشعارهم من أوصاف الخيل.
