التفقه في السنن النبوية، وتفهم معانيها، وشرح غريبها وبيان ما يشكل منها، يعد من المقاصد الشريفة، والرتب المنيفة، والعلم بذلك من أشرف العلوم الشرعية.
ومن جملة الفقه في السنن معرفة الأحاديث التي يبدو معناها مشكلاً، ونحوها مما يرى أنه لما ثبت مخالفاً، فيتوجب على أهل العلم إزالة ما أشكل، وتوضيح ما يظن أنه مختلف، مع مراعاة القواعد من غير تكلف ولا اعتساف، وهذه غاية عظيمة قل من يوفق لتحصيلها، ومركب صعب عز من يمتطيه: "وإنما يكمل للقيام به الأئمة الجامعون بين صناعتي الحديث والفقه، الغواصون على المعاني الدقيقة".
وفي هذه الرسالة يتصدى الإمام شمس الدين البرزنجي -وهو ممن جمع بين صناعة الحديث والفقه- لبيان ما ورد عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في القنوت، وذكر مذاهب العلماء فيه، وما لكل مذهب من الأدلة، وسرد الروايات في ذلك، وخوض غمار الجمع والتوفيق بينها، وبيان الصحيح في ذلك من غيره، ناقلاً أقوال الأئمة الحفاظ، وخصوصاً الحافظ ابن حجر، والإمام النووي، وفي إثر ذلك أتى بفوائد لطيفة، واختيارات وجيهة تدل على حسن فقاهته وامتداد باعه.
