عني العرب وخاصة علماؤهم إيما اعتناء بدراسة أحوال البلدان والأقاليم وصنفوا في ذلك الكتب والمؤلفات الكثيرة التي فاقت ما لدى غيرهم من الأمم الأخرى على أن تقويم البلدان جاء فريداً في تبويبه شاملاً في ما أورده من معلومات عن أحوال تلك الأقاليم مما لم يرد في جميع الكتب التي سبقته. إذ أن من تعرض منها لصفات البلدان، لم يضبط الأسماء ولم يذكر الأطوال ولا العروض.
ومن عني بتصحيح الأسماء وضبطها لم يعني بذكر والأطوال والعروض. وقد جاءت كل تلك المعلومات متفرقة هنا وهناك في بطون الكتب حتى عقد المؤلف العزم على جمع شملها في كتاب واحد يكون مرجعاً لمن جاء بعده وسار على نهجه، وقد عرض المؤلف فيه لما يجيب معرفته عن ذكر الأرض والأقاليم السبعة والبحار قبل أن يعمد إلى ذكر البلدان المختلفة. ورتبه ترتيباً حسناً واضحاً، وجمع فيه الكثير من الغرائب والعجائب بعد أن تحقق من صحتها.
