هذا الكتاب هو محاولة لوضع مجموعةٍ من الأسس والمبادئ لخطة تصنيف متخصّصة في مجال الفنون، تكون عالمية في تغطيتها ومنهاجها، العربية والإسلامية في تصميمها، وتفصيلاتها؛ تراعي خصوصيات الإنتاج الفكري العربي الإسلامي للفنون، والأسس الفلسفية العقدية في مجال الفنون؛ إذ أن أية نظم للتصنيف في العالم الإسلامي –وبخاصّة في مجالات العلوم الإنسانية والفنون- يجب أن تكون إنعكاساً للفلسفة العقدية المؤثرة في شخصية الأمة.
يعالج الكتاب الفن عامة بوصفه موضوعاً من موضوعات المعرفة المتخصصة، فيناقش مصطلح الفن ومفهومه، وتطوره، والإشكاليات الفلسفية والتصنيفية للفنون، وأنواع الفنون وتقسيماتها في التصانيف الفلسفية، وفي أشهر التصانيف الببليوجرافية، موضحاً مدى تأثر أنظمة التصنيف الببليوجرافية بالفكر التصنيفي الفلسفي للفنون.
وفي معالجته للفنون العربية الإسلامية يتناول الكتاب مفهوم الفن العربي الإسلامي، وخصائصه، وفلسفته، والتوجهات النوعية والشرعية للفنون الإسلامية، ويناقش بعض المحاولات لتصنيف الفنون الإسلامية في خطط التصنيف الفلسفية والببليوجرافية، ويقدم عرضاً نقدياً للمحاولات العربية، التي بذلت للتعديل في بعض أرقام تصنيف الفنون في تصنيف ديوي "Dewey" العشري، بما يتناسب والفنون العربية والإسلامية والإنتاج الفكري لها.
وينتهي الكتاب باقتراح منهجية، وآلية عمل تُصنَّف على أساسها الفنون عامة، والفنون العربية والإسلامية خاصة، يمكن تطبيقها في المكتبات العربية والإسلامية المتخصصة في مجال الفنون أو تلك التي لديها أقسام كبيرة أو مستقلة للفنون.
