ذكر الروّاة أنّ أول من وضع النحو أمير المؤمنين عليّ بن أبي طالب رضي الله - كرّم الله وجهه، أنّه قد ألقى إلى أبي الأسود الدؤليّ صحيفة فيها كليمات حول الإسم والفعل والحرف وحدّ كلّ منها، وفيها طلب التتبعّ والزيادة لصناعة كتاب في أصول العربيّة يحفظها بعد تفشّي اللحن.
ثمّ تتابع العلماء وكثرت مصنّفاتهم في النحو، ووصل إلينا منها عدد لا بأس به، ومن هذه الكتب يأتي هذا الكتاب وهو كتاب موجز من التراث يعين للمتعلمين وينير لهم مبادئ العربيّة ويذلّل لهم مسالكها، ذلكم هو "كتاب الفصول في العربيّة" لابن الدهّان (ت 569هـ).
ولأهمية الكتاب، اعتنى بتحقيقه الدكتور "فائز فارس" وكان عمله في هذا الكتاب يقع في ثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول: مقدمة تحوي دراسة موجزة للكتاب، والباب الأول فيه حياة ابن الدّهان، مصنّف الكتاب؛ أما الباب الثاني فيضم وصفاً للكتاب المحقق "كتاب الفصول في العربيّة"، وبياناً لمنهجي في تحقيقه.
أما القسم الثاني: فيه متن الكتاب المحقق "كتاب الفصول في العربيّة" لابن الدّهّان، وهوامش وإحالات تنير الكتاب وتشرح بعض غوامضه، القسم الثالث: فهارس حديثة للكتاب تعين الناظر فيه على الوصول إلى بغيته من غير تعب أو عناء.
