"قررت أن أعتزل في حجرتي بالمبنى المخصص لضباط قوّة الوساطة الدولية وقوادها، لذا لم يعد يعنيني التبادل العنيف للقصف المدفعي في ضواحي الملعب الأولمبي، ولا تهاطل القذائف القادمة من التلال الموجودة في الجهة الأخرى من النهر. ما يحدث لي هو أخطر بكثير من تبديد وقتي الثمين في كتابة تقارير أو القيام بمهام روتينية أو دوريات مراقبة. إنّ حضوري لا يتوفر على سلطة تغيير مجرى الأحداث، ولا تلطيف مصير هذه المدينة المعذبة التي استُنزفت دماؤها.
تعللت بحجتي تعرضي لنزلة برد حادة، فمكثت ممدودا في سريري، وأنزلت سواتر النوافذ، وغرقت في عتمة مخصبة ومهدئة. أشعر بحاجة ماسة إلى مراجعة نفسي، وإدخال بعض الترتيب على انفعالاتي وأفكاري. بيد أن القلق الذي عراني إثر وصول "خ.ع" واختفائه الغامض لا يعادل قطعا ذلك الاضطراب الذي استبد بي بعد قراءة متأنية لمخطوطاته. إن وصفه للمشاهد التي دمرها المحاصرون، ورسمه القاسي والمنذر بالشؤم للمجتمع الذي يتربص بنا- (سمفونية العالم الجديد) حسب تسميته التي أطلقها بسخرية لاذعة- وعرضه المفصّل لمصرعه في الموقع الذي فاجأه فيه قصف المدفع… كلّ ذلك كان كافيا كي يبقيني في حالة صدمة ويحول بيني وبين المنام."
