يتناول هذا الكتاب حوارية بين مفكرين مختصين حول موضوع (نحن والآخر)، ويعالج قضايا عديدة تندرج ضمن محاولة تقديم فهم عميق لطبيعة العلاقة بين الإسلام والغرب، ويكتب كل منهما بحثه وتعقيبه على بحث الآخر مستقلاً.
ويعرض أولاً إشكالية الآخر في أقنعته الداخلية والخارجية، ويوضح كيفية تصنيع الآخر لأسطورته من خلال البحث في أصول التمركز حول الذات، وفي خدمة العلوم الإنسانية لتصنيم التفوق العرقي، وفي إيديولوجية الاستعمار بتفكيك وإعادة هيكلة واستتباع، وفي تكريس الماركسية للمركزية الغربية، وفي تفضيل إنجلز الاستعمار للجزائر، وفي ظهور الآخر بقناع جديد بالمركزية الأممية الثالثة.
ويوضح تحكم الآخر عن بعد بوعي النخب المحلية وبدونه، من خلال البحث في المرأة، والعلمانية والحداثة وآثار التحولات الجديدة على النخب العربية.
ويعرض ثانياً للاختلاف سنة كونية وللتنوع أمراً محموداً، وللقبول بالآخر شرطاً لاحترام الذات، وثقافة الحوار والاعتراف بالآخر ليسا ترفاً فكرياً؛ فالله القادر حاور إبليس العاجز.
ويبحث في الإبداع والخصوصية والرأي الآخر وقبول ثقافته، والمصالحة بين المثقف والسياسي، ويبين أن التعددية والحركية لازمتا العقل البشري.
ويبين نقاط الوفاق والاختلاف مع الآخر الغربي، ونفي الآخر في الخطاب اللينيني، والبحث عن الحقيقة بين النسبية والكمال، وفضيلة الاستماع للآخر، ويعرض المنهج القرآني مع الآخر. ويورد بعد تعقيب كل باحث على الآخر، تعاريف بمصطلحات الكتاب.
