يعتبر النقاد ومؤرخو الشعر ت.س. إليوت الأب الروحي لحركة الشعر الحديث التي ظهرت في العالم العربي في أعقاب الحرب العالمية الثانية، وعلى الرغم من أن هذه الأبوة لم تعد تعجب نقاد الشعر الاجتماعي الذين أصيبوا بخيبة أمل كبيرة لدى قراءتهم قصائد إليوت الأخيرة ومن بينها "أربعاء الرماد" و"مسيرة النصر" فإن ذلك لم يقلل من أهمية إليوت وتأثيره المباشر وغير المباشر على حركة الشعر الحديث في العالم العربي كله. ولما كان موقف "إليوت" من حضارة الإنسان قد أدى إلى مراجعة شاملة لأعماله الفنية والنقدية أملاً في إيجاد تصور كامل لما قام به هذا الشاعر الفذ، فإن هذه المراجعة فتحت المجال لمناقشة كثير من القضايا التي تفرعت من تصوره الفني. ومن الغريب أن معظم الذين تأثروا به إلى حد كبير وجدوا أنفسهم فجأة يقفون على طرفي نقيض معه. ليس في موقفه من حضارة الإنسان فحسب؛ بل في تصوره لطبيعة العمل الفني في ذاته، وكان ذلك مثار عجب ودهشة، وفي ذات الوقت تأكيداً تأكيداً لموقف إليوت القائل بأن الفن العظيم هو الذي يثبت وجوده بطاقة إقناعه كَفَنٍّ؛ وليس بما يضفي عليه من تصورات فكرية مفضوحة لم تجد طريقها إلى التعبير الأصيل. وعلى الرغم من أن هذه الحقيقة مقبولة في حد ذاتها؛ فإن ذلك لا ينفي أن إليوت لعب لعبة حاذقة لم يسبقه إليها أي أديب في تقديم نفسه للجمهور، فقد استطاع إليوت أن يستقطب حوله جميع الأطراف المتباعدة، وحين انتهت حياته جعل الجميع يتساءلون إلى أي فريق ينتمي؟!!
من هذا المنطلق يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يقدم في البداية التصور المتكامل لتجربة إليوت الفنية من خلال الدراسة القيمة التي كتبها ماثيسن والتي تمت ترجمتها بعدما حذف منها الجانب المتعلق بأعماله المسرحية وأتبع ذلك محاضرات ت.س. إليوت الثلاث التي عالج من خلالها الآراء المختلفة خلال القرون الثلاثة الماضية على قرنه كما تجلت من خلال النقد لا سيما ذلك النقد الذي كتبه الشعراء بأنفسهم. نذكرهم على التوالي" درايدن وورزورث وكولردج، شيللي وكتيس، ماثيو أرنولد.
