يتساءل المؤلف في هذا الكتاب (الثورة الفرنسية على الشاشة) عما إذا كانت السينما فضلاً عن جوانبها الفرجوية، قد نقلت صورة صادقة عن الثورة. ولقد وجد نفسه أمام منهجين: إما توخي التسلسل الزمني لظهور الأفلام المتعلقة بالثورة الفرنسية في مختلف البلدان (من لويس لومار إلى يوسف شاهين). أو توخي التسلسل الزمني لأحداث الثورة وبالتالي دراسة الأفلام التي تحدثت عنها وفق ذلك التسلسل. فاختار المنهج الثاني. حيث عمد إلى تعقب فصول الثورة الفرنسية حسب تسلسلها وأورد الأفلام التي عالجتها مقارناً بين الحقيقة والتخيل. ذلك أن رؤى السينمائيين كانت مفعمة بالأهواء غالباً. لذلك لجأ المؤلف إلى مؤازرة الحقيقة التاريخية بطريقة تصورها وتقديمها على الشاشة. ولم يخف رأيه في نسبية هذه أو تلك.
