ازدادت أهمية التجارة في حياة المجتمع الحديث سواء على الصعيد القومي أو الدولي، وتعددت المشروعات التجارية وتنوعت العمليات التجارية مما أدى الى استحداث الكثير من المصطلحات التجارية.
كما أصبحت الوظيفة المالية من أهم وظائف نشاط الأعمال، فلا يمكن لأية منشأة أن تقوم بنشاطها من إنتاج أو تسويق أو غيرها من وظائف المشروع دون توافر الأموال اللازمة لتمويل أوجه النشاط المختلفة، وأوجه الإنفاق المتنوعة.
وتقوم البنوك بدور هام في إنشاء المشروعات وتنشيط أعمالها وتطويرها، وفي التقدم الإقتصادي بصفة عامة. وقد اتسعت في العالم الحديث أنشطة البنوك، وتعددت المصطلحات الخاصة بأساليب العمل في هذا النشاط. وقد استلزم ذلك تحديد مفاهيم المصطلحات في الجماعات التجارية والمالية والمصرفية ليدرك مدلولها على وجه الدقة، كل من يمارس هذه الأعمال. والمعجم الذي بين يدينا يأتي في هذا الإطار حيث يتضمن المصطلحات الخاصة بالمشروعات التجارية والعمليات التجارية والتجارة الخارجية والنقل البري والبحري وترويج السلع. والمصطلحات المالية المتعلقة بالتمويل والسياسات المالية والإدارة المالية. كما تناول المصطلحات المصرفية كالاعتمادات والصرف والأوراق المالية والحسابات المختلفة والقروض.. الخ.
وقد رجعنا في تعريف هذه المصطلحات الى العديد من المعاجم العربية والأجنبية، وقد نشرت في نهاية هذا المعجم. وقد وضع هذا المعجم ليفيد منه جميع القائمين بإدارة الأعمال.
