تُعدُّ المذكرات أحد أبرز المصادر الأساسية للعملية التأريخية، وقد تكون بحد ذاتها المصدر الأساسي الأول، نظراً لأهمية صاحبها وموقعه في الحدث التاريخي، كما هو الحال في مذكرات القاضي جرجس صفا نعمة.
ولا يخفى ما للمذكرات من الناحية المنهجية، من أهمية في الكتابة التاريخية، فعند فقدان الوثائق الأساسية تصبح المذكرات وخصوصاً مذكرات القادة العسكريين والدبلوماسيين والرحالة والسياسيين والتجار وكبار الموظفين وغيرهم النموذج الواضح وربما الوحيد لتسجيل الواقع كما هو، ولإبراز الوصف الدقيق للحياة السياسية وخصوصاً الإجتماعية منها على إختلاف أشكالها وأنواعها ودقائق تفاصيلها، وهو الأمر الذي ينطبق على حال المذكرات التي بين أيدينا.
حيث غلب على صياغة هذه المذكرات أسلوب السرد الركيك، فلم يبال كاتبها ببلاغة الإنشاء أو المحسنات اللفظية، فجاءت أقرب إلى ما يفهمه العامة مبنى ومعنى، أما لجهة المضمون فقد جاءت غنية لجهة ما كانت تحفل به الحياة السياسية في فترة المتصرفية، وخصوصاً إبان حكم المتصرفين الأوائل، إذ أن هناك لوحات وصور جاءت بأدق تعابيرها، مجسدة واقع الحياة السياسية، وما هي عليه من بدائية وعفوية لجهة تصرفاتهم مع العامة أو الخاصة، وما كانت تنطوي عليه نفوسهم من طيبة حتى السذاجة، أو جبروت وقسوة ونظافة كف، وهي صفات أساسية في رجال الدولة العظام.
وفي المذكرات أيضاً معلومات غنية عن حياة الجبليين، وصوَر عن عاداتهم وتقاليدهم وطبقاتهم الإجتماعية، وحرصهم على حفظها وعدم التعرّض لها، فضلاً عن مباذل المتصرفين وبعض معاونيهم من موظفين وعامة، كما أنها تتضمن لمحات عن المرتبات التي كان يتقاضاها موظفو الإدارة، وأسعار بعض الحاجيات، وأهم مطبوخات السكان وحلوياتهم، وخصوصاً أهل الدير منهم.
إن أهمية هذه المذكرات تكمن في أنها جاءت شهادة معاصرة من أحد أعمدة القضاء في عهد المتصرفية، ومن ابن بلدة دير القمر الأكثر إلتصاقاً بالحكّام المتصرفين، فكما عرف الناس المتقاضين والمتخاصمين، فقد عرف الحكّام فعاشرهم عن قرب، وخَبُرَ مكامن القوة والضعف فيهم، وما تنطوي عليه نفوسهم من مشارب وأهواء، فشهد في مذكراته شهادات حق دون غرض أو محاباة، ودون عصبية أو تحيّز.
