في كلمات قليلة يذكر المؤلف في مقدمته أن كتابه هذا " مقالة في بيان حال الخضر: من نسبه وحسبه، وما يتعلق به من أمر ولايته، ونبوته، وطول حياته، وبقائه، ومماته، وغيبته، وحضوره في بعض مقاماته بإختلاف منازلاته، وإتفاق خوارق عاداته في بعض أوقاته ". أما أهم ما ركز عليه، فهو الإنتصار لمن قال بحياة الخضر عليه السلام، والرد الطويل على من قال بوفاته، ومناقشة إبن الجوزي والتعقيب على أدلته التي أنكر فيها بقاء الخضر، والتي أودعها كتاب " عجالة المنتظر في شرح حال الخضر ". لقد كان الكتاب دقيقاً عندما قال إن ما كتبه " مقالة " فقد أوجز الحديث في الخضر، ولم يتناول جميع جوانبه، كما لم يتتبع الروايات الكثيرة والآراء المتنوعة لأطراف الخلاف...بل إكتفى بإبراز الجزانب المهمة من حياته، والرد على من ذهب إلى موته عليه السلام. ثم إن الكاتب لم يلتزم منهجاً موضوعياً في فصول الكتاب...ففي الفصل الرابع الذي سميته " قصص الخضر ولقاءاته " يعلق على قصته مع موسى عليه السلام، ثم يورد بعض نصائحه ووصاياه، فيعرج على ما قيل في سبب بقائه، ثم عن موته، فما ورد في تعزيته الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم لوفاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم...ثم يعود إلى ما قيل في دلائل نبوته، ويرجع إلى تعليقات على قصة الخضر وموسى عليهما السلام ووصاياه، ثم عن قصصه ولقاءاته مع إلياس والرسول الكريم والصحابة والصالحين والعامة بدون ترتيب...كما نرى إستطرادات أخرى في الفصول الباقية لا علاقة لها بالموضوع المعالج بل نرى تكراراً لموضوعات في أكثر من فصل...
