يعتبر كتاب الموطأ للإمام مالك بن أنس من أهم ما صنف من كتب الحديث. وقد روى الموطأ عن مالك عدد كبير من العلماء. وفيه يقول الإمام الشافعي: ما وضع على الأرض كتاب هو أقرب للقرآن، من كتاب مالك. وقد تناوله بالشرح كثير من العلماء وعلى رأسهم إمام المالكية الإمام أبو الوليد سليمان بن خلف، صاحب كتاب "المنتقى شرح موطأ مالك" ذلك الكتاب الذي اختصر فيه ما جاء في كتاب له ألفه مطولاً في شرح الموطأ والموسوم بكتاب "الاستيفاء".
وذلك تسهيلاً للاطلاع عليه. وقد اقتصر في كتابه المنتقي على الكلام في معاني ما يتضمنه الاستيفاء من الأحاديث والفقه، وأصل ذلك من المسائل بما يتعلق بها من أصل كتاب الموطأ ليكون شرحاً له وتنبيهاً على ما يستخرج من المسائل منه، وإشارة إلى الاستدلال على تلك المسائل والمعاني التي يجمعها وينصها ما يخف ويقرب ليكون ذلك حظ من ابتدأ بالنظر في هذه الطريقة من كتاب "الاستيفاء". معرضاً في كتاب المنتقى عن ذكر الأسانيد وعن استيعاب المسائل والدلالة وما احتج به المخالف، سالكاً فيه السبيل الذي سلكه في كتاب "الاستيفاء" من إيراد الحديث والمسألة من الأصل، متبعاً ذلك بما يليق به من الفرع وأثبته الشيوخ المتقدمون من المسائل وسند من الوجوه والدلائل.
