لا ريب أن الغزالي أعجب شخصية في تاريخ الإسلام، ومذهبه صورة لشخصيته. وهو قول قريب من موقف "رينان" من أ ن الغزالي هو الوحيد بين الفلاسفة المسلمين الذين انتهج لنفسه طريقاً خاصاً في التفكير الفلسفي. إن الغزالي إذن يمثل نقطة متميزة في التاريخ الفلسفي عند المسلمين وذلك لكونه عبر عن شخصيته ولم يكن صدى للآخرين ولكن هل هذا الشذوذ من الصفات الحسنة في عالم الفلسفة أم هو من الصفات القبيحة المتعارضة مع جوهر التفلسف؟ إن الإجابة عن هذا لا تكون إلا حسب موقفنا من فلسفة اليونان، فإن اعتبرنا الفلسفة يونانية فقط فإن هذا الشذوذ يخرج الغزالي من عالم الفلسفة. أما إذا اعتبرنا الفلسفة هي نشاط العقل الواعي بذاته وبالعالم دون ربطها بالجهة الجغرافية أو الانتماء الحضاري يكون الشذوذ دليل نضج وعلامة استقلال وولادة فيلسوف.
