تنبع أهمية دراسة الإتحاد الأوروبي كظاهرة إقليمية متميزة من عدة مبررات كان لا بد من الحديث عنها، وكما يلي؛ أولاً: تعد تجربة الإتحاد الأوروبي من أكثر التجارب التكاملية والإندماجية الإقليمية نجاحاً.
فدراستها مطلوبة من أجل التعرف على العوامل والأسباب التي ساهمت في تحقيق هذا النجاح على المستويين الداخلي والخارجي، ثانياً: وجود بعض النقص في الأدبيات العربية، التي تناولت الحديث عن هذه الظاهرة الإقليمية غير واضحة المعالم في جوانبها المختلفة.
فالحاجة كبيرة إلى دراسة موضوعية للتجربة الأوروبية بكل أبعادها المختلفة، علماً بأن معظم الدراسات العربية التي تناولت تجربة التكامل والوحدة في أوروبا، قد تبنت، على الرغم من قلتها، مواقف وأحكاماً، متأثرة إلى حد كبير بالطابع العقائدي أو الأيديولوجي، وأدت أيضاً إلى الترويج لمواقف متطرفة وأحياناً متناقضة.
لذا فإن الأمر يتوجب المزيد من البحث والدراسة، ثالثاً: محاولة التعرف على خصوصية هذه الظاهرة ومميزاتها على الرغم من عدم نضجها والغموض الذي يعتريها في بعض جوانبها الهيكلية، حتى كتابة هذه الأسطر، رابعاً: محاولة الوصول إلى العبر من هذه التجربة لتعميمها والإستفادة منها، وبخاصة في ضوء التحولات العالمية التي ظهرت منذ أواخر القرن الماضي التي ما زالت مستمرة حتى أيامنا الحاضرة.
ويبرز هدف الدراسة الأساسي من خلال تلك الإعتبارات السابقة، بالوقوف على تميز الظاهرة الإقليمية الأوروبية المتمثلة بالإتحاد الأوروبي في أبعادها التنظيمية والهيكلية، وكذلك في أهميتها كمتغير في النظام والنسق الدولي وكفاعل إقتصادي وسياسي يحاول أن يصبح قطباً دولياً فاعلاً.
