يضرب هذا البحث بجذوره في "فلسفة اللغة" ويتخذ من "التحليل اللغوي" صدراً لعنوانه. هذا وتنقسم مادته إلى خمسة فصول تسبقهم مقدمة وتلحقهم خاتمة، عالج الفصل الأول بعض المواقف الفلسفية من اللغة العادية ثم درس موقف فلاسفة أكسفورد منها، وناقش الفصل الثاني تصور فتجنشتين المبكر والمتأخر لوظيفة اللغة وقد أخذ في التصور المبكر بالنظرية التصويرية التي نتجت عنها نظرية المعنى شبيهة بنظرية التحقق عند الوضعية المنطقية.
وحاول الفصلين الثالث والرابع عرض تصور فلسفة أكسفورد لتحليل وظيفة اللغة ممثلاً في المنطوقات الأدائية وأفعال الكلام عند أوستن وأصداء هذا التحليل عند بقية الفلاسفة أكسفورد ثم أثره على من سار في ركابهم من فلاسفة اللغة, وأخيراً ناقش الفصل الخامس نظرية التحقق للمعنى وكشف عن بعض مثالبها.
