لما كان أداء المعنى بأساليب الكناية والمجاز ليس عن طريق الدلالة الوضعية، التي هي دلالة اللفظ مباشرة على المعنى، وإنما كان عن طريق الدلالة العقلية، أي معنى المعنى الذي هو حاصل معنى التضمين والالتزام- لما كان الشأن فيها كذلك كانت الإجادة في استعمال هذه الأساليب وتنويعها مرهونة بأمور ثلاثة: [الأمر الأول: وجود غرض يعين هذه الأساليب طريقًا لإفهام المراد، ويجعلها العنصر الرئيس في تكوين العبارة، والأمر الثاني: وجود رابطة تربط بين المعنيين، والأمر الثالث: أن احتمال دلالة اللفظ على المعنى الثاني احتمال مرجوح لا يتقوى ولا يتعين إلا بوجود دليل يفصح عن إدارة نوع هذه الدلالة المعنوية].
هذه الأمور الثلاثة هي عمد موضوعنا "العلاقات والقرائن في التعبير البياني" التي قوم عليها بناؤه، وتدور في إطارها مسائله. وهي أمور لها في الدراسة البيانية شأن كبير؛ لأنها تمثل الجوانب والأسس التي تقوم عليها نصبة الكلام وبلاغته في أساليب البيان المختلفة، وقد اشتملت الدراسة بعد المقدمة على مدخل وبابين هم: [الباب الأول: العلاقات، الباب الثاني: القرائن].
