لقد تغيرت النظرة التقليدية إلى المراهقة وتظاهراتها النفسية، فلم يعد الاكتئاب مثلاً ميزة من ميزات النمو نفسه ينتهي بتجاوز تلك المرحلة ويتلاشى معها كما يقول أ.فرويد ووينيكوت. فالاكتئاب لا يختفي تلقائياً بل يترك آثاراً عديدة على الصعيد النفسي والاجتماعي والعائلي والمدرسي مع ما يترتب على ذلك من نتائج سلبية على المستوى الاجتماعي والفردي.
وهذا الكتاب يبحث في الاكتئاب الذي يرافق مرحلة المراهقة في كثير من الأحيان. والسؤال الذي ينطلق منه المؤلف هو معرفة ما إذا كان الاكتئاب لدى المراهق يشكل واقعية فعلية أم قناعاً يحتمي به. لقد أثبتت الدراسات الحديثة أن الاكتئاب ليس حدثاً عابراً بل هو نتاج بنية نفسية وتعبير عن حالة مرضية مستديمة ذات صلة وثيقة بالماضي الطفلي وبالمحيط العائلي.
أما عن أسباب وظروف نشوء الاكتئاب لدى المراهق، فإن المؤلف، انطلاقاً من نظرة شمولية، يعرض كل وجهات النظر التي تطرقت إلى هذا الموضوع. وبما أن الاكتئاب لدى المراهق ليس حدثاً معزولاً فإن الكاتب يشير وبوضوح إلى دور العائلة وأهميته في نشوء الاكتئاب وتفعيله والحفاظ عليه، وهكذا يصبح الاكتئاب نتاجاً جماعياً. لذا فإنه لا يقترح علاجاً نفسياً للمراهق وحده، بل يركّز على أهمية مشاركة الأهل في العملية العلاجية كشرط لاستمرارها ونجاحها.
