تضمّن كتاب فكرة الجمهورية في فرنسا تفسيراً مسهباً للمكوّنات التي أسّست قيم الجمهورية الفرنسية بوصفها منعطفاً كبيراً في التاريخ غيّرت ما سبقها، وأثّرت في ما بعدها، وتجاوزت فرنسا إلى غيرها من الشعوب والبلدان، وأكدت، من بين أهمّ ما أكّدت، أنّ للمواطن حقوقاً، وعليه واجبات، وأنّ المواطنة يجب أن تكون نشيطةً وفاعلةً وليست سلبيّة.
وإذا كان كلود نيكوليه (Claude Nicolet) قد ركّز في هذا الكتاب على تاريخ جمهورية فرنسا منذ اندلاع الثورة الفرنسية سنة 1789 إلى سنة 1924، فإنه لم ينحصر في تأريخ الأحداث وتحليلها بل تعمّق في رصد تاريخ الأفكار السياسية، وبالتالي فإنه ليس مجرّد تدوين للأحداث بل هو تناول نقدي لتاريخ الجمهورية، أو كما يقول نيكوليه نفسه: "إنه تاريخ الجمهورية من جهة أنها تمثل ورأي، أي أيديولوجيا".
