الزهد ضد الرغبة، والتزهد هو التعبد، كما عرفه أهل اللغة، والزهد في الدنيا مقام شريف، ومنهج أهل الحب والتعريف، وقد قال الإمام الجنيد: الزهد هو خلق القلب عما خلت منه اليد، وقال أيضاً: سمعت سرياً السقطي يقول: إن الله عز وجل سلب الدنيا عن أوليائه، وحماها عن أصفيائه، وأخرجها من قلوب أهل وداده، لأنه لم يرضها لهم، وقال الإمام أحمد رضي الله عنه: الزهد في الدنيا قصر الأمل. وقال الفضيل بن عياض رحمه الله: أصل الزهد الرضا عن الله قال: هو أزهد مني. وقال أيضاً: الزهد في الدنيا يريح القلب والبدن.
هكذا ترى السلف رضوان الله عليهم كانوا من أزهد الناس اقتداءً بسيد الناس صلى الله عليه وسلم فإنه كان المثل الأعلى في الزهد في الدنيا، وكان أعبد الخلق وأقربهم إلى ربه صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وانطلاقاً من ذلك سارعنا إلى تحقيق هذا الكتاب المبارك الذي يعرفنا على الزهد وصفته وفضله وعظم قدره وأجره، ويكون سبباً لمعرفة علو مقام العبودية الذي خلقنا من أجله، وكذلك يعرفنا على قدر الدنيا ومهانتها وحقارتها عند الله تعالى، وأن أهل الأنس بالله العباد الزهاد فرغت قلوبهم من محبة كل شيء سوى الله تعالى وما يقرب إليه من قول أو عمل.
والزهد للإمام الزاهد المحدث هناد بن السري الكوفي من أهم الكتب المصنفة في هذا النوع، لما تفرد به من رواية وجمع ولما أسند مرفوعاً وموقوفاً ومقطوعاً في مقام الزهد وصفة الزاهدين، وكذلك كتاب المحدث الإمام أبي حاتم الرازي، فإنه مع صغر حجمه لا يقل أهمية عن سابقه لما فيه من روايات قد تفرد بروايتها عن شيوخه، فضلاً عن كونه إماماً عظيماً له قدره العلمي وتراثه الحديثي، الذي لا يستغني عنه طالب العلم.
